. right now, that would be the romney campaign. new polling in battleground states tonight, the latest cnn/orc survey in ohio done entirely after the first debate, now showing a four point obama lead. that's a statistical tie. it is a significant change from the seven to ten point lead the president enjoyed before the debate. new polling as well from sienna college that shows a statistical tie in pennsylvania. that's based on surveys done both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest though, disputing or downplaying the obvious, that's what campaigns do on

quinnipiac poll, little boost from the debate there. let's come over to a huge state. romney probably needs to win florida. i can give you a scenario where he wins without florida, but it's a hard one. he had been down pretty big numbers. look at this. "the wall street journal" poll 48% to 47%, a statistical tie in the battleground state of florida. come up the coast, predebate there were polls in the state of virginia showing the president opening up a big lead outside the margin of error. new poll out today, romney 48%, president obama 47%. a statistical tie in battleground virginia. so there's colorado, nevada, florida, virginia. and one i'm just back wolf from the state of ohio. we had a cnn poll showing romney making gains. president still with a very narrow lead. consistent with that a new nbc "the wall street journal" poll out today, governor romney at 45%, predebate polls showing romney down seven, eight, even nine points. in all the battleground states and national polls romney's coming up. that's the momentum the republicans hope to keep in tonight's debate. >> john, is there any

romney. was it just a question of manners? also, while polls show mitt romney turning things around, he still faces a big hurdle in a critical battleground state. why ohio's so-called walmart moms may not be sold on the republican nominee. and should race or ethnic background be considered when students apply to college? the u.s. supreme court weighs a new challenge to affirmative action. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> the obama administration got a grilling today over the assault on the united states consulate in benghazi, libya, that took the lives of the united states ambassador and three other americans. state department officials took a lot of heat in a partisan congressional hearing. and the white house was also bombarded with questions today about the handling of the entire incident. let's go live to our white house correspondent, dan lothian. he's got the very latest. dan. >> reporter: wolf, you know, this was the first briefing that we've had in about two weeks because the president

policy credibility, the obama camp is comparing mitt romney to chevy chase and our most recent poll shows voters give the president a 7-point edge on world affairs. is a challenger, any challenger, be it mitt romney or anyone else, obliged to do this, obliged to become the commander in chief like more a moment and give a foreign policy speech right before the election? >> yes. mitt romney has been aggressively pursuing the foreign policy area because he thinks the president is vulnerable. yes, the president did manage to kill osama bin laden on his watch, but in certain other areas the romney folks if you listen to all of the national security advisers, the foreign policy advisers, they think the president is very vulnerable, especially the notion of leading from behind. they say a romney administration would not lead from behind but rather lead from out front, and they're going to go after the president aggressively. you will see this in the course of romney's address which has been very carefully prepared and carefully written and you certain saw to a certain degree when romney did his

poll, mitt romney has gained eight points. you can see on the right side of the screen back in september. on the left side of the screen is where they are now, while the president dropped one point. and new hampshire, he has gained four points according to a wmur poll. what's the strategy, going into the vice presidential debate, what's the plan to turn this around? >> we don't think anything needs to be turned around. this race was going to be close. our strategy is to get out there, energize and engage our voters. when people look at the choice it's going to be pretty clear to them that president obama is a better choice for the middle class. we feel very confident in our ground game and we're implementing that across the country. the president was in ohio yesterday, the voter registration deadline, encouraging people to go vote, early vote, go register. you'll be out in florida tomorrow and that's what we're focused on, not getting whipped up and down with the ups and downs of these polls. we know there will be many more ups and downs in the coming days. >> you don't have

new hampshire. the latest arg poll of likely voters shows mitt romney at 49% and president obama at 46%. that's in florida right now. that's within the sampling error. meanwhile, with just 25 days to go before election day there are some serious concerns about a republican financed voter registration effort in the state. cnn's crime and justice correspondent joe johns is joining us now with the latest on a criminal investigation making waves right here in washington. joe, what's going on? >> wolf, he is a veteran gop operative who just doesn't seem to go away. a few weeks agoaway. a few weeks ago, a wave of bad publicity hit the waves. he was disavowed by the republican national committee. tonight, some democrats that criticize his tactics say they're worried he may still be operating in several key battleground states under a different company name. >> it all started with nathan sprule. they came under fire for providing false information at the supervisor of election office. they responded by throwing him under the bus even though he denies wrong doing. by that time the republican pa

this poll this is a recent poll that shows more americans trusting obama over romney on foreign policy. do you think, though, that maybe, maybe team romney senses an opportunity, an opening here? >> yes, they definitely sense an opening as a result of what happened in benghazi, libya. i think the president has been popular as far as foreign policy is concerned as he got all the u.s. troops out of iraq, no more u.s. troops in iraq. americans are war weary, if you will, he's got a timeline to getting all u.s. troops out of afghanistan. but probably much more important than that, brooke, is that he managed to kill bin laden. that is something very, very popular. so i was a little surprised that romney went after the president in this speech today on iraq, because getting u.s. troops out of iraq has generally been popular, though romney did make valid points. the iraqi government, nuri al maliki is moving closer and closer to iran, it's facilitating iranian supplies of weapons to syria. this is not a good aftermath of all the years of struggle in iraq for sure. getting americans out of iraq th

. mitt romney's big win in last week's debate, of course, receiving now about, we understand, in the polls how long it's going to last, we really don't know. that question, of course, could be answered tonight. we're talking about this one and only vice presidential debate from our senior political analyst and national editorial director and, ron, you and i were at those vice presidential debates. last go round back in 2008 when a record 70 million people watch that night. there was so much excitement, and i think there was a lot of curiosity, how sarah palin was going to go up against joe biden and a lot that came out of that debate. what do we make of the expectations tonight between biden and now ryan? >> well, first of all, i would be surprised if the audience was as big as it was in 2008 when sarah palin was a political and cultural phenomenon. the romney-obama debate received an enormous audience, even bigger than we expected. i was at the last debate in danville, the vice presidential debate between joe lieberman and dick cheney, but i think the analogy here, the model

hopeful mitt romney is taking the morning airwaves by storm, she's also surging in popularity. a new abc news-washington post poll shows she's more popular than her husband right now. >> i want to bring in lynn sweet, washington bureau chief for the "chicago sun-times". she's joining us via skype right now. the candidate's wives have long been considered a secret weapon in the fight for female voters in particular. how effective is ann romney as a campaign surrogate right now? >> i think she's a terrific surrogate for mitt romney because she's able to tell a story that only she can tell, which is what is he like? what's the man behind the candidate? what does he like to do, and also everybody is always interested in the county's family and kids, and that's the potential for her herself. there's no down side to having a campaign as much as she's up to. >> of course, everyone knows there's a long history of, you know, it is man whose vying for presidency has the ear, you know,of his wife and vice versa, whether it's a.m. ann romney in this case, michelle obama and president obama and nancy
